Improvised baroque musicExploiting the exotic sounds of the Ukulele (an instrument of Hawaiian origin whose name means ‘jumping flea’, in relation to the rapid movements of the right hand), this programme takes an unexpected look at the greatest arias of the Italian and English baroque repertoire, from Claudio Monteverdi and Frescobaldi to Henry Purcell and John Dowland.

With the viola da gamba as bass, a viola and a violin as lines, a ukulele as rhythm guitar and two female voices, the four musicians offer a version of these melody-songs in which the text is emphasised and the tradition of baroque improvisation resonates with that of jazz.

Jazzics - Jazz meets classical
38Riv celebrates the dialogue between jazz and classical music. Rereading the great repertoires, bringing together instruments from different eras, free improvisations: a meeting where borders are erased in favour of a common language.
Conceived as a tribute to Vincent Charbonnier, founder of 38Riv and a passionate double bass player, this programme is in the spirit of Jacques Loussier's “Play Bach”: curious, inventive and free.

Marie Salvat: violin, voice, ukulele
Jeanne Zaepffel: voice
Agnès Boissonot-Guilbault: viola da gamba
Robin Kirklar: viola
