They say musicians don't choose each other, they recognize each other. That's exactly what happened between Ricardo Izquierdo and Sergio Gruz. These two found each other—as if it were a natural fit. With their project Raíces en Acuerdo, they pay homage to their roots, those that still vibrate beneath the notes.
Ricardo, a Cuban saxophonist, and Sergio, an Argentinian pianist, delve back into the music that rocked them. There's Drume Negrita, a lullaby full of tenderness, Llora, and Cartas de amor que se queman, love songs that are both luminous and full of cracks. And then there's La Trunca Norte, made famous by Mercedes Sosa, and Piazzolla's Soledad, all chiaroscuro and nostalgia.
But here, there's no question of a sensible cover. This duo chooses the spirit, not the letter. They reclaim the pieces in their own way: free, lively, and inhabited. We sense a true alchemy between them, a keen listening, a shared breath. Their music is pure dialogue, fluid, intense, and sometimes burning. As if their instruments were sharing secrets.
A close, generous, and above all, deeply human duo.
