In 2006, Amy Winehouse released Back to Black, her second studio album: a short, brutal, and deeply intimate record, in which she candidly chronicles toxic relationships, addiction, and loneliness. Twenty years later, this cult album has become one of the monuments of contemporary soul, on a par with the great classics of Billie Holiday and Dinah Washington: a confession set to music.
To celebrate the 20th anniversary of Back to Black, Melissa Lesnie, an Australian jazz singer with a velvety voice and a decidedly retro charm, will bring this fiery material back to life: the sensuality, despair, and dark truths of essential tracks such as “Rehab” and “You Know I'm No Good,” as well as the jazz standards that shaped Amy's world. Because for her, “every bad break is just a blues song waiting to be written”!
