Bassist Gili Lopes leads his quartet with Fabio Gouvea on guitar. Between original compositions and intricate arrangements, their jazz is direct, refined, and lyrical. An immersion in contemporary sound.
Gili Lopes is a bassist and composer rooted in the contemporary New York jazz scene. Born in Porto Alegre, Brazil, he has spent his life soaking up numerous deep musical traditions – from the folk and popular sounds of his native country to his many musical journeys around the world, including his studies at the Guildhall School of Music and Drama in London and the University of Fine Arts in Berlin – which he synthesizes into a rich and personal language for composition and improvisation.
In 2024, Lopes released Algures, chosen by Downbeat magazine as one of the best jazz albums of the year. Described as "refined and captivating" by Jazzwise, this musical travelogue explores universal themes with an "exceptional group" (Jazziz) that includes "a formidable team of accompanists" (All About Jazz), notably saxophonist John Ellis and drummer Ari Hoenig, two seasoned masters of modern jazz who help propel the music to the forefront of jazz. Downbeat praised Lopes' "sensitivity," bringing the music back to the source of each tradition that composes it, and then surpassing it. Algures received two Global Music Awards, a World Entertainment Award, and was considered one of the best jazz albums of 2024 by Downbeat magazine.
