Prism - Salomé Gasselin

“Prism emerges as a new sonic sensation: a meeting on stage between the music of Keith Jarrett and Henry Purcell, between a consort of violas da gamba and the guitar, and Kevin Seddiki’s zarb.

While I had been primarily immersed in the visceral sounds of old music, I was moved by Keith Jarrett’s work. His lyricism, trance-like quality, improvisation as a starting point, and his way of drawing from folklore are facets that allowed me to instantly enter his world. These points of access, shared with old music, opened up a new imagination for me, like a kaleidoscope turned toward the light. In that same kaleidoscope, I glimpsed the music of Henry Purcell and his Fantasies for violas da gamba, written during the summer of 1680. The harmonic boldness, the contrasting writing tinged with British standards, and the great modernity of these fantasies radiate in the same direction as many of Jarrett’s pieces.

I proposed to Kevin Seddiki, an improviser, guitarist, and percussionist whom I admire, that we compose this Prism together. We will blend consort, solo, duo, and trio in a concert featuring pieces by Keith Jarrett, fantasies by Henry Purcell, jazz standards, and 17th-century English standards, all linked by recomposed, improvised fragments to reveal the full intensity of the rays and colors of its facets and bring out a sense of continuity.”
