With Roots and Things, bassist and composer Jakob Dreyer opens a new chapter in his artistic journey. Based in New York since 2014, he unveils his third album as a leader, a project driven by a communicative energy, a strong taste for swing, and a new sonic palette.
Following the two installments of Songs, Hymns and Ballads, Dreyer assembles here a remarkable quartet featuring vibraphonist Sasha Berliner, tenor saxophonist Pennicott, and drummer Salters. Together, they breathe life into 15 original compositions as well as a fresh and personality-infused reinterpretation.
Conceived as a musical journey rich in contrasts, Roots and Things alternates between energetic pieces, catchy grooves, contemplative ballads, and short interludes that punctuate the listening experience. The vibraphone, at the heart of this new adventure, brings a bright and distinctive color that immediately sets the album apart from its predecessors.
From the opening notes of "The Fifth Floor" and "Constellation," the group displays remarkable cohesion. Other tracks such as "June Tune," "Downtime," or "Fight or Flight" showcase the diversity of moods and the richness of Dreyer's writing, always guided by a sense of melody and interaction.
With Roots and Things, Jakob Dreyer delivers an album that is elegant, vibrant, and deeply rooted in the jazz tradition, while asserting a distinctly personal voice.
