In one sentence: this biography presents Jean-Pierre Bertrand as one of France's leading ambassadors of blues and boogie-woogie, recognized for his international career, piano virtuosity, teaching talent, and major role in promoting this music through the festivals and events he creates.
Jean-Pierre Bertrand is a French pianist specializing in blues, boogie-woogie, and swing. He discovered this music at the age of 12 after attending a concert by Memphis Slim in his hometown of Saint-Germain-en-Laye. Trained as a classical pianist, he soon adopted a self-taught approach in order to devote himself to traditional jazz and boogie-woogie.
His professional career began in the early 1990s after several years in the hospitality industry. He opened a jazz restaurant-club in Paris, where he welcomed many renowned musicians. His encounters with Jean-Paul Amouroux and later the German pianist Axel Zwingenberger played a decisive role in his artistic development and international recognition.
Throughout his career, Jean-Pierre Bertrand has:
- Recorded 15 albums;
- Performed more than 100 concerts and masterclasses each year;
- Played in numerous countries (France, Germany, Austria, Switzerland, Poland, and the United States);
- Appeared at major festivals, including Jazz à Vienne before an audience of more than 8,000 people;
- Recorded an album in Nashville with leading American musicians.
His album Mosaïc (2019) was acclaimed by critics, receiving a 5-star rating from the Hot Club de France and a Coup de Cœur ("Editor's Pick") from Jazz Magazine. He has also received several international honors, including the Pinetops Music Award (2019), induction into the Cincinnati Hall of Fame (2019), the Leon Von Knobelsdorff Award (2018), and a Nashville USA Music Award (1990).
On stage, his style combines virtuosity, elegance, swing, and improvisation while remaining faithful to the roots of blues and boogie-woogie. He enjoys introducing his pieces by telling their stories as well as those of the great musicians who inspired them, making his concerts both musical, educational, and accessible.
One of the most remarkable moments of his career was becoming the only pianist in the world to perform on the Arctic ice pack at the North Pole in the year 2000 during a private event.
Alongside his concert career, Jean-Pierre Bertrand is also a festival organizer and producer, notably of the Nuits Jazz & Boogie Piano in Paris and the Beaune Blues Boogie Festival. He is regarded as one of the leading figures behind the revival of boogie-woogie in Europe since the late 1980s and also brings his expertise to the organization of cultural and corporate events.
