Samba Azul is a constantly-evolving group of musicians led by drummer Adam Osmianski who share a love of the varied, beautiful, and exciting sounds of Brazil. What began as an intimate trio has grown into a diverse chameleon collective sometimes involving as many as nine musicians. Tonight at 38 Riv they will appear as a classic piano trio.
In the 1960s while the cool, mellow sound of Bossa Nova was popular in Rio and spreading throughout the world, another style of music began to appear as a reaction to Bossa Nova. Often performed by the musicians who backed famous Bossa Nova singers, the music they created was an edgier, more driving style inspired by the hard bop sound and the Blue Note label. This style came to be known simply as “Samba Jazz” or “Hard Bossa”.
Joy Ellis: piano, vocals
Jonny Wickham: bass
