40 Bulles de Jazz - Opening - Exhibition
As part of the festival: Jazz des cinq continents 2022

A major event in the festival calendar, Jazz à Vienne celebrates its 40th anniversary in 2021.

If you have not yet lived the unique experience of a Jazz concert in the magnificent ancient Theater, a real wall of audience facing the musicians, overlooking the city, the Rhone and the hillsides of Côtes Roties and other Condrieu, then do not hesitate to consult their program. Of course, you won't be able to go jetskiing or rock climbing there, but since 1981, a wonderful jazz adventure has been unfolding. The city is entirely dedicated to music, to meeting people and to living well. They have welcomed the legends of Jazz to build a history of music and mark the memories with unforgettable concerts. For several years they have engaged an interdisciplinary partnership with another of the biggest festivals in France, the Angoulême Comics Festival. The link with the comic strip dates back even further and gives rise to associated experiences, music and drawing, at each edition.

To celebrate its 40th anniversary, the Jazz à Vienne festival wanted to organize an exhibition entitled "40 Bubbles of Jazz". This exceptional project, composed of original works, proposes the works of 40 cartoonists who embody contemporary comics. Of different ages and nationalities, the artists chosen represent the many trends that have marked the last 40 years. With this exhibition, they all come together around the same subject, jazz. Each of them explores, according to his own techniques, the abundant universe of this music: an imaginary bewitching or unreal, sometimes funny, and always of a great sensitivity.

Echoing the artists' proposals, 40 writers, journalists and renowned artists have taken up the challenge of putting pen to paper to describe their feelings about the artist's work.

We wanted to host this unique exhibition of drawings and writings in Marseille to celebrate the fruitful fraternity between our two festivals. The friendship between Jazz à Vienne and Marseille Jazz des cinq continents is not new. It expresses this very beautiful need to share experience, which we all feel when we are in charge of our ships. The year 2020 has made this obvious. Beyond a short sighted aspect of competition, the Festivals work together, create corridors for the artists and mesh the territory for a sustainable development.

Thank you to the Festival Jazz à Vienne team, to its teams and partners, for giving us the opportunity to present to Marseille, to the people of Marseille, its anniversary event.

The exhibition is hosted by the BMVR Alcazar, as part of Alcajazz 2022 from June 7th to August 31st 2022. Admission will be free. The Library is a central place in our city's culture and offers Marseille Jazz the possibility of reaching and convincing a very wide audience, well beyond the usual circles. This exhibition will also be the occasion for mediation workshops and guided tours throughout the duration. Marseille Jazz des cinq continents would like to thank the Music and Youth Departments, which will be joining forces to welcome some of the 40 artists and writers for meetings of the kind the people of Marseille love. The BMVR Alcazar is a large space for public reading, study, research and conservation of heritage collections. It is also an active place for cultural development, facilitating access to information, education, culture and leisure for all. Since 2004, with the Alcajazz event, concerts, exhibitions, meetings and film screenings have accompanied the content of the Festival program and given it a perspective in the heart of the city. The 40 Bubbles of Jazz Exhibition will be an appointment not to be missed.
