A native New Yorker, Jerry González was bilingual: he spoke Spanish and English, played the blues and the rumba. A multi-instrumentalist, his trumpet reflected the influence of Miles Davis and Dizzy Gillespie, while his congas evoked his Puerto Rican roots and his mastery of Afro-Cuban rhythms. With his group The Fort Apache Band, he created a unique blend of Latin jazz that combines the pieces of great composer-leaders like Thelonious Monk, Wayne Shorter and Art Blakey with Afro-Caribbean grooves. This concert will be dedicated to them!
