With its 25 years of existence, saxophonist Sylvain Cathala's Print band has gone through countless metamorphoses (sometimes swelling to the size of a small big-band!) while always keeping at the core of its personality the original quartet comprised of Stéphane Payen on saxophone, Jean-Philippe Morel on double bass and Franck Vaillant on drums. It's in a new quintet formula – augmented for the occasion with the mutating sounds of Benjamin Moussay's modular piano – that it now presents an ever more organic and experimental music. Combining the density of highly sophisticated writing with the intensity and energy of wildly unbridled improvisations, Print continues to make its music a refined and poetic little laboratory in which jazz shakes up his certainties.
