There is a story behind Andy Narell's choice of instrument... His father, a social worker, brought the steel pan to New York in order to get kids off the streets and into steel bands. He became an ambassador for this unusual instrument and was one of the first to integrate it into jazz, giving it a unique place in the fusion spectrum.
