Martinique pianist Mario Canonge and singer Annick Tangorra form an exceptional duo, juggling the nuances of jazz with uncommon ease.
Singer, songwriter and composer Annick Tangorra demonstrates once again, with the utmost simplicity, that she is one of the most moving voices in jazz today. Her voice is a suave blend of restrained lyricism, carnal elegance and refined sensuality. Her great rhythmic ease and magnificent vocal technique are at the service of a music that is at once festive, languorous and melancholy, served up by Mario Canonge on piano, undoubtedly one of the greatest exponents of Caribbean music: his playing, velocity and allure are renowned!
What is a piano-bass duo in jazz? The first answer is given by Mario Canonge: “First of all, it's a kind of sidelining of the drums, without refusing them. We've played with great drummers like Tony Rabeson, Simon Goubert, Keith Copeland and Arnaud Dolmen, but with a duo, nothing is forgivable. The drummer makes everything easy. It's reassuring and convenient, whereas in a duo you have to be attentive at all times. You can't relax, and in fact, after an hour and a half of dialogue, we're almost happy to stop. The exercise demands real concentration. It doesn't allow any weakness in the harmonies, otherwise the discourse wears itself out.”
