“I'm not a jazz singer,” she said. Jazz is an insult. It's an obscene, insulting word to me. I'm a black artist. My name is Abbey Lincoln. Nothing else.
Alongside her fellow musicians, Charlie Mingus, John Coltrane and Ornette Coleman, Abbey Lincoln was acclaimed and recognized, despite herself, as a jazz singer. Sometimes compared to Billie Holiday, she confirmed this filiation in 1987 with a tribute album entitled “Abbey Sings Billie”.
