Two American legends for a set dedicated to music without borders or limits, with the cosmic jazz of Sun Ra Arkestra, still as exuberant after 7 decades of activity, and the techno ragas of Tomorrow Comes The Harvest, a project led by DJ and producer Jeff Mills.
1/ Sun Ra Arkestra
Formed in the mid-1950s as a vehicle for the compositions of the whimsical American keyboardist Sun Ra, the orchestra has spanned the decades, embracing a wide variety of influences, from bebop to electronic music, spiritual jazz, blues and the wildest improvisations. Since 1993 and the death of its leader, the Sun Ra Arkestra has continued to spread the word relentlessly, with captivating concerts and previously unreleased albums. In the stream of reissues and live recordings (most recently, Nuits de la Fondation Maeght, featuring the two famous concerts of August 1970 in Saint-Paul-de-Vence), new recordings have recently been released. Over the past five years, Sun Ra Arkestra seems to have enjoyed a new lease of life, with the release of three studio albums, the formidable Swirling (2020), Living Sky (2022) and Lights On a Satellite (2024). The band's music is as lush and expansive as ever.
2/ Jeff Mills “Tomorrow Comes The Harvest” feat. Jean Phi Dary and Prabhu Edouard
The Tomorrow Comes The Harvest project is the brainchild of American producer and DJ Jeff Mills - a 35-year master in the art of propelling techno into new territories - and Franco-Nigerian drummer Tony Allen - an Afrobeat mainstay with a rich, protean background. Released in 2018, the live album Tomorrow Comes The Harvest bears witness to the first incarnation of this project, where keyboardist Jean-Phi Dary completes a particularly sharp trio. Following the death of Tony Allen in the unhappy spring of 2020, Jeff Mills chose to reinvent the group by inviting Indian tabla player Prabhu Edouard. Recorded on the album Evolution, released in 2022, the long tracks imagined by the trio take on a solar, hypnotic beauty. The fusion of electronic percussion, synthesizers and tablas creates a path to trance, in the midst of magnificent, ever-changing landscapes.
