A budding songwriter, Flouzat drew a lot of his inspiration from the wit and understated sophistication of composers and lyricists like Harold Arlen, Yip Harburg, Hammerstein or the Gerschwin brothers to name a few. The art of condensating a storyline in three A's and a bridge. He mades a specialty of learning the lyrics to lesser known standards and calling them in sessions, delving into songbooks and interpretations, made them part of his drum routine. Over his snare exercises, he would sing Nice 'n Easy, Where or When or I've Got You Under My Skin.
It all started with a postcard. "Why don't you record your trio with Sullivan, an informal session of standards and easy pieces? I'd love to listen to that." When he received this mail by his longtime friend and collaborator Laurent Coq, Guilhem Flouzat was thinking about his next album, carefully crafted songs in the line of his previous release on Sunnyside records, This meant a complete switch of gears. Instead of showcasing compositions, he would bare himself of all arrangements and preparation, pick only two favorite session companions and the songs he loved. Making A Thing Called Joe was also a challenge: How do you create a standards album you would want to listen to, among all the existing classics?
