THURSDAY, MAY 11, 2023 – The ZAZOUS jazz band invite the American clarinettist from New Orleans Tommy SANCTON In the early 1960s, New Orleans was sometimes violently like any other destination on the Gulf Coast. But the city's irrepressibly vibrant music culture has inspired civil disobedience among musicians and fans. In '62, veteran African-American musicians at Preservation Hall became mentors to Tommy Sancton, a young white clarinet student and traditional jazz enthusiast. In '64, the Civil Rights Act brought the nation to its senses and laid the legal foundation for friendships across the color line to flourish. As a teenager, Tommy Sancton continued to play regularly with some of the great African-American entertainers of the day – clarinetists George Lewis and Willie Humphrey at Preservation Hall, and along parade routes with Harold "Duke" Dejan's Olympia Brass Band. For Tommy Sancton, the experience was an education far beyond what he was learning in school. "For a 13-year-old to hang out with and love and learn and laugh with and eat with and play parades with guys in their 60s and 60s and sometimes 80s or 90s — that was an exceptional thing," said said Tommy Sancton. "I think it enriched me as a human being." And this Thursday, May 11 Tommy SANCTON comes to share, and transmit his extraordinary music, his New Orleans Jazz.
