Sofia Rei & Jean-Christophe Maillard

In her most recent project, an exhaustive exploration of the voice as an instrument of texture and expression, Sofía Rei breaks with the established continuity of her work, creating a bold new soundscape that blends South American folk with pop, electronic music and improvisation. During a journey of introspection in Chile's Elqui Valley, Sofía, armed with two backpacks containing recording equipment and her charango, created the nucleus of her new musical adventure: "Umbral" (Threshold). Her unorthodox compositions are built almost exclusively from vocal loops and form part of the "Cinco poemas cínicos" (Five cynical poems) series, in which the singer-songwriter demonstrates her natural penchant for lyricism. Incisive and imaginative, Sofia's poetry responds to heartbreak, disappointment and disappointment with unabashed candor, elegant humor and a strong dose of sarcasm. Produced by world music luminary and long-time collaborator JC Maillard, Umbral brings together some of the most talented musicians on the new international Latin scene.
